Intent: To enable all learners to enjoy and succeed in mathematics so that they are equipped with an understanding of mathematics that will be relevant and useful in their future studies and/or in the world of work.

At Hillside, our maths curriculum follows a mastery approach and is designed to build on children’s prior knowledge, allowing learning to be rehearsed and retrieved.

We ensure children have the opportunity to develop their maths fluency skills through fluency lesson starters, consistent rehearsal of number bonds and times tables and encouraging all children from EYFS to Year 6 to consider ‘What do you notice?’.

To secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2, we follow the NCETM Mastering Number Programme led by a lead maths teacher in each year group.

Our aim is to spark curiosity and excitement and nurture confidence in maths. We use Power Maths to support our teaching and each maths lesson models and embeds a growth mindset approach and focuses on helping all children to build a deep understanding of maths concepts.

One of the key underlying elements of our curriculum is its practical approach, allowing us to make maths real and relevant to your children, no matter their age. Manipulatives are essential resources for all key stages and lessons at Hillside encourage children to use these at every opportunity, and to continue the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach right through to Year 6.

“Children recognise the importance of maths as a subject and how this can support them positively in the future particularly regarding career choices.”
