Through learning a range of strategies, children build resilience and confidence and are equipped to apply mathematics to the world they live in; fostering a love of the subject.

At Hillside we base our maths teaching on the Power Maths curriculum mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement and nurture confidence in maths.

Each lesson models and embeds a growth mindset approach to maths and focuses on helping all children to build a deep understanding of maths concepts.

One of the key underlying elements of Power Maths is its practical approach, allowing us to make maths real and relevant to your children, no matter their age. Manipulatives are essential resources for both key stages and Power Maths encourages teachers to use these at every opportunity, and to continue the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach right through to Year 6.

Due to the pandemic, many children have gaps in their mathematical knowledge.  So we are following a recovery programme ensuring we are building the firm foundations of place value and the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
